Difference between Group Discussion and Debate

 

Group Discussion

A group of participants sits together and discusses the topic. It is a communicative situation where the participants share their views, opinions, and conclusions about a certain topic. This defines group discussion. It is mainly done in colleges, schools, and organizations. In colleges, group discussions play a major role. It is one of their weekly activities to perform and is also good training for their interviews. Group discussion helps in gaining loads of knowledge by discussing some of the technical topics or discussing the situations going around the world. You can talk about the problems, how to solve them, benefits, and also take authentic examples if needed in a group discussion. You should not argue or make it seem like a debate. If you do not know the topic, do not panic, you can make a smart move by listening to others, understand the topic and speak up. It enhances your educational development as well. You need to develop good listening skills, communication, confidence, and a positive attitude. The valid points should impress the interviewer you make. Even in organizations, group discussions play a vital role.  

Debate

We can define the debate as an argument. Two teams will be formed proposition and opposition, and a situation or topic will be given to the debaters. You need to oppose other’s viewpoints. You need to think of the situation critically since the opposing team will persuade you and will speak against the topic. If you are on the negative/opposing team, you need to prepare for the possible valid answers and provide few key points with supporting evidence. This is nowhere related to group discussion. The major difference is debate is a formal argument between two individuals or groups and group discussion is an exchange of ideas and opinions. The debate has a conclusion and a discussion may or may not have a conclusion. The debate has two opposing teams whereas discussion does not.

Advantages

You can gain loads of information from a group discussion and debate. In a discussion, you would know many points and learn much more about the topic. Since it is a group of many individuals, you will have the advantage of varied views. You and other individuals can learn more about the topic by exchanging information. However, the disadvantages could compromise decisions and time-consuming. Advantages of the debate are it improves note-taking skills, teamwork improves critical thinking, and you learn how to persuade. It nurtures public speaking and rational thinking as well. 

Decision Making

Decision-making is very crucial and leads to better outcomes. In a group discussion, it helps every individual improve their skills and knowledge. A group can recognize a problem, purchase decisions and, gains information. Formal debates lead to moral decision-making. The issues in the debate need to be defined provide valid pieces of evidence and then the debate becomes an excellent decision. Decision-making is used in both group discussion and debate. Decision-making improves the quality of decisions, multiple perspectives, and improves understanding.

Opinions

Group discussion is all about viewpoints and opinions. You need to stick to a topic in a group discussion but you can also change your mind if your explanations are not valid. There are many useful phrases to start a discussion, use them. You need to make distinctions about opinions in a debate. Uninformed opinions are not much of use. You need to have evidence too but shreds of evidence can be lies too. However, evidence is much more of use than opinions.
